Lobia Cheela

Lobia Cheela are nutritious savory pancakes made from chawli (red or white cowpeas / lobia). The soaked beans are ground with spices and herbs to make a protein-rich batter, then cooked on a tawa like a cheela. These cheelas are high in plant protein, fiber, and minerals, making them a healthy breakfast or light meal. They taste delicious with any green chutney like aloo bhujia green chutney or curd.

Ingredients

1 cup red or white chawli or lobia (cowpeas)

2 green chillies

1 inch ginger

4 to 5 garlic cloves (finely chopped)

2 tbsp coriander leaves (chopped)

¼ tsp turmeric powder

Salt to taste

Water as needed

1–2 tbsp oil or ghee for cooking

Instructions
  • Soak the red and white chawli or lobia (or any available) in water for 8–10 hours or overnight.
  • Drain and grind with ginger, green chillies, cumin, and a little water to make a smooth batter.
  • Transfer batter to a bowl and mix in:
  • coriander leaves
  • turmeric powder
  • salt
  • Heat a cast iron or non stick tawa and lightly grease it.
  • Pour a ladle of batter and spread like a pancake.
  • Drizzle a little oil around the edges.
  • Cook until golden, then flip and cook the other side.
  • Serve hot.
